BSN number guide

Netherlands BSN guide for international students (2026)

A BSN is the number that unlocks work, housing paperwork, health insurance, banking and DigiD in the Netherlands.

What is a BSN number?

A BSN, or burgerservicenummer, is your Dutch citizen service number. You normally receive it after registering with a Dutch municipality. Employers, banks, insurers and government services use it to identify your records.

Who needs a BSN?

International students, EU workers, non-EU residents and anyone planning to work in the Netherlands need a BSN before payroll and most official services can run smoothly.

How do you get a BSN?

  1. Book a municipality registration appointment for your Dutch address.
  2. Bring your passport or EU ID, rental contract or address permission, and enrollment or employment documents.
  3. Register your address and check that your name, date of birth and nationality are spelled correctly.
  4. Keep the confirmation letter because employers and service providers may ask for it.

Got your BSN? Step 2 is your DigiD setup.

DigiD is the login you use for Dutch government and healthcare services. It is much easier to apply once your BSN registration is active.

What can go wrong?

Most delays come from missing address proof, name mismatches, overloaded appointment calendars or a move between municipalities. If you need a job quickly, keep screenshots or confirmations of your appointment and ask the employer what they can accept before payroll starts.

What happens after the BSN?

After your BSN is active, set up DigiD, arrange health insurance if required, open or verify your bank account, and keep your availability ready for recruiters. The DigiD step matters because many official portals assume you can log in digitally.
